Established in 2009, the Mooresville Police Department’s Honor Guard is a ceremonial unit that represents professionalism, respect, and honor. Members of the Honor Guard serve as guardians of the colors, including the American and North Carolina flags, during ceremonial events including funerals.
POLICE K-9 OFFICERS
Officers are chosen and trained for their assignment as K-9 handlers. The officer and their police dog are considered a team and are assigned to a patrol shift. The K-9 team receives extensive ongoing training on a variety of tasks that include tracking and searching.
PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS
The Mooresville Police Department currently employs three full-time Public Safety Officers. While none are sworn law enforcement officers, they all have an extensive background in public service, two of them having served over twenty years with the New York Police Department before retiring. PSOs are assigned to the downtown area of Mooresville enforcing parking laws, assisting patrols with traffic control, and assisting the downtown businesses, as well as working as liaisons to the Mooresville Recreation Department by patrolling the parks and gymnasiums.
SUPPORT SERVICES DIVISION COMMUNICATIONS
The Communications Center of the Mooresville Police Department is housed within the main police facility. They are responsible for operating the center 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and answering all law enforcement 911 and non-emergency calls for service for the citizens of Mooresville.
Detectives assigned to Investigations are responsible for investigating a variety of crimes including homicides, serious assaults, sex offenses, identity theft, fraud, and other crimes committed against persons and property.
Officers volunteer for the assignment of crisis negotiator. It is not a full-time unit, but its services are utilized during circumstances that require specialized training and equipment for those in crises and/or hostage situations.
DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION (D.A.R.E.)
D.A.R.E. is taught in the local intermediate schools. Students learn the harmful effects of drug abuse and are taught positive strategies to deal with peer pressure and social situations that may present difficult choices. D.A.R.E. is taught by a trained instructor provided by the Mooresville Police Department in cooperation with local schools.
SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS
The Mooresville Police Department, in partnership with the Mooresville Graded School District, implemented a resource officer program in 1998. The program focuses on maintaining a safe school environment for students, teachers, administrators, and staff. Each officer is assigned to a school and maintains a presence throughout the school day and during school functions.
SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM
Similar to Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.), the Mooresville Police Department's Special Response Team (S.R.T.) is staffed by sworn officers who volunteer for the assignment. They receive specialized training and are equipped with specialized protective equipment as well as lethal and non-lethal weaponry.
Detectives assigned to the Narcotics Unit are responsible for investigating crimes related to illegal drug trafficking, gambling, prostitution, and alcohol-related crimes. Detectives in this unit also investigate crimes involving the illegal use, sale, or purchase of prescription drugs.
The training function is maintained in the Office of Professional Standards. As part of their responsibilities, the office ensures that Mooresville Police Department personnel maintain their required professional certifications and qualifications. They are also responsible for developing tracks for professional development, and developing programs that benefit the entire organization.
BIKE PATROL OFFICERS
Officers volunteer for the assignment of a bike patrol officer. It is not a full-time unit, but bike officers are utilized in various situations where police services are maximized by foot or bike patrol.
